10 Ways Rookies Waste Money on a Cruise

Now is the perfect time of the year to escape the winter blues with a cruise around the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. For first-time passengers, though, there’s a lot to learn. There’s plenty of ways you can waste money on a cruise, even if you’re booking an all-inclusive trip.

Here’s the top ten ways rookies often get caught out.

Data Roaming Charges

While we’re on vacation, many of us will still want to be able to check our social media and newsfeeds from back home. These overseas charges can quickly add up, though, especially if you decide to post some photos or videos.

Using the Onboard ATM

With new experiences to try and souvenirs to purchase, it’s difficult to predict how much you’re going to spend. Not taking enough money and using the onboard ATM can end up costing you even more, though, as individual transactions often come with a minimum $5 fee.

Excess Shore Excursions

Shore excursions often seem like the best way make the most of your time on land. Booking through the cruise line can often cost much more than third-parties though. Similarly, with a little research online, you could head out into the city yourself and make a significant saving.

Getting Caught up at the Casino

Almost all major cruise lines now come equipped with a casino. While it can be tempting to spend your nights playing blackjack with a group of friends, remember to quit while you’re ahead. There’s a whole host of other onboard activities available to you.

Booking at the Wrong Time

When booking a cruise, timing is everything. Booking in advance with providers like Planet Cruise often makes the biggest saving to your trip. Similarly, avoid school holidays if you’re looking for a relaxing vacation away, as this is when families will be bringing their children.

Splurging on Professional Photographs

Many cruise lines now offer professional photography services. Rather than paying a premium, though, why not designate a member of your party to take the pictures each night so you can both save money and catalog your experiences.

Drinking Too Much

While we all like to have fun while on vacation, drinking too much can end up making a serious dent on our budget and making the following morning unbearable. Know your limits and remember that all-inclusive packages don’t necessarily include alcoholic drinks.

Eating at the Specialty Restaurants

Most ships now include speciality restaurants in addition to the main dining rooms. These are a great way to treat yourself on the last day, but don’t overdo it by eating there every night. Remember you’ve already paid for meals as part of your package.

Assuming It’s All Inclusive

Many first-time passengers assume everything is included in their all inclusive holiday. In reality, though, shore tours, spa treatments, cabin services, and premium drinks will all come at an additional expense.

Overtipping Members of Staff

Just to be clear, we don’t mean that you shouldn’t tip members of staff at all. However, auto-gratuity and service fees are often included in the price. Tipping again will mean you’re spending twice what you intended.
