Learn which supposed facts about London are actually myths and misconceptions

Travellers heading to London know so much about it already through television or reading a guide book. There are often many errors that tourists come to London believing so they should learn what the truth is and what is not. For instance, it is believed that Big Ben has another name, which is St Stephen’s Tower. This is actually not true and since 2012 has been called the Elizabeth Tower, and previous to that was known simply as the Clock Tower. Often many people also believe that when the flag is flying at Buckingham Palace that the Queen is at home, when this means the opposite that she is away on public duties.

It is also believed that the entrance to the Savoy is the only place in the UK where travellers can drive on the right. It is true that this happens but there are other places where this occurs also. There is also a thought that there are no roads in the City of London, which was traditionally true. There are many roads that have names that include Square, Alley and Street but no Roads. However, this changed when boundaries altered in 1994 and now a part of Goswell Road is within the City. A very famous mistake that is believed by the public is that the small nose on the inside of the Admiralty Arch is a monument dedicated to the Duke of Wellington. It is actually just something that was created by artist Rick Buckley.

There is also a strange belief that a gas lamp in Carting Lane, off the famous Strand, is powered by sewage. This is not the case as many would like to believe. A recent claim by a blogger was that there are 109 journeys between London’s tube stations that are quicker to walk. This is partly true although the writer later insisted that the original number may be too high. There are beliefs that the Viaduct Tavern has old cells from Newgate Prison in its basement. This alas is also not true as it’s understood that this is actually just a cellar.

There are many things that get stated as fact in guide books, so it’s important if possible to ask if on an official tour through London. The city is full of history and it’s very important that travellers try and find out the truth. There are many destinations to stay when visiting the English capital but to be close to the attractions and sights of the tourist trail, travellers should choose somewhere in the centre to reside.
