7 Off of the Beaten Path Destinations to Try This Summer

Traveling over the summer can be tedious, especially if your destination is popular amongst tourists. Going someplace that is located off of the beaten path can be the relaxing treat that you are looking for. Let’s take a look at a few locations that are worth checking out.

  1. St. John’s, Canada

St. Johns is not a place that you would typically consider for a summer getaway, but this picturesque town is full of history and adventure. There are not a lot of tourists in this town throughout the year, but you can enjoy beautiful vistas, delicious seafood, and explore the rural areas with seaside hikes and coastal drives that are breathtaking. Summer is also the only time of the year that you can see humpbacked whales off of the coast of this town, so you can have a unique experience if you travel to St. John’s during this time of year.

  1. Isle of Sky, Scotland

If you are looking for a location that is truly going to give you a break from civilization, then the Isle of Sky is a place where you can go and walk in nature for miles without seeing another soul. The rocky coastlines, narrow lochs, and snow-capped mountains are a sight to see, and if you are interested in architecture and history, there are plenty of castles to explore. You can even go for a swim in the fairy pools of Glen Brittle if you’d like. Be warned, these waters are often very frigid, even during the summertime.

  1. Hainan Island, China

This is a tropical island that is located off of the Southern coast of China. It is a place that locals may go to get away from the hustle and the bustle of city life, but it often not known about by those from outside of China. It is actually called China’s Hawaii because of the gorgeous beaches that can be found on the island. There is also a volcano park on the island where you might see some of the wild monkeys that live there.

  1. Koh Lipe, Thailand

If you want to visit a location that is off of the beaten trail, then Koh Lipe is a great destination because it can only be accessed by boat, which limits the tourists who visit. The beach is quiet and beautiful, but some parts have not been developed as beaches. This means that these areas are often deserted, but the natural beauty of the shore is something worth seeing, especially since there is a large reef located right off of the shore with a large percent of the tropical fish that you can find in the world.

  1. Gates of the Arctic National Park, Alaska

If you like nature, then the Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska is about eight and a half million acres of untouched wilderness. There are no trails to follow, no roads to drive on, and no established places to rest your head at night. If you have survival skills to camp in this wilderness, then it is something well worth considering. The nights are cold, but the fishing here is superb. If you have no idea how to set up camp in this type of environment, Fairbanks is just a short flight away.

  1. Rangiroa, French Polynesia

When you think of tropical paradise, the first thing that pops into your mind is probably Tahiti. Maybe it is Bora Bora, but I can pretty much guess that you did not think of Rangiroa. This location is one of the most beautiful atolls in the world, but it is not a tourist destination, so the simple beauty of the island is still present. The lagoon is breathtaking with white sands touching the edge of the water, and the coral that can be found here makes this a great place to go diving.

  1. Cranberry Isles, Maine

If you like to sail, then the Cranberry Isles in Maine is a great summer destination that is off of the beaten path. It is a 50 square mile archipelago that is made up of five small islands. There is only a ferry every two hours that takes you back to the mainland, so if you are planning to spend some time on the islands, you should plan accordingly. Don’t miss out on the pebbled beaches while you are here because they are simply breathtaking to see.

Not everyone likes to hit up the tourist destinations because they can quickly become overcrowded. If you prefer a destination that is off of the beaten path, try some of our featured destinations this summer.
