Best Destinations for Backpacking Trips in Europe Starting from Ireland

If you are a backpack trips lover then you have to be familiar with the fact that Europe is one of the best places to take a backpacking holiday. Because it is such a small continent containing so many  different countries – each with different culture, it is easy to see a lot of places and do a lot of things in a relatively short space of time. Each country has something to offer whether a visitor is interested in art, history, culture, or nightlife, festivals, etc – there is something even for the pickiest visitors.

Sometimes the hardest thing can be deciding which of the countries to add to an itinerary and which will have to wait until next time. Here are just a few of the best destinations for backpacking trips in Europe that should be in everyone’s top 5 starting from Ireland.

Ireland – This may be just a small island of the coast of England but it has a wealth of things to offer any visitor. With history, culture, nightlife, and wonderfully friendly locals, from the vibrant capital city of Dublin to the quiet coastal town of Rosslare, there will be something to do and see. The landscape of Ireland can be green hills one minute and mountains the next and thanks to the great travel links it is easy to explore every part of this small but beautiful country. Irish ferries operate cheap ferries from Ireland to the UK, Denmark and France. Using the ferries from Rosslare are a great way to travel from Ireland to countles beautiful cities when you are visiting Europe.

Copenhagen, Denmark – Despite being a well known European city Copenhagen is not as full of tourists as you may imagine. It has wonderful examples of architecture and lots of museums and culture spots that you can visit. You can also purchase a travel card here that gives discounted or free entry for many of its sights and attractions. One of the best and cheapest ways to get around though is by bicycle. There are lots of cycle lanes around the whole city which make it safe. It is also a short trip from here across the bridge to Sweden, which you could do on a day trip and it is close to Germany.

The Greek Islands – It can be easy to lose yourself in the islands for weeks at a time because each one has something unique to offer and the regular and cheap ferry links mean that you can island hop to your heart’s content. However, even if you are a little pushed for time, it is worth spending a few days sampling the warmth of the Greek people and the history and culture of the islands. And of course the food – never forget to taste some of the most popular, national dishes of each country you visit. In this case I strongly recommend you to try the Greek mousaka – it is amazing.

Hvar, Croatia – This has been growing in popularity over recent years and you are now just as likely to bump into someone rich and famous as into a fellow backpacker. However, accommodation can still be found for all budgets and the scenery, beaches and secluded coves make this a popular destination for backpackers. Spend the days enjoying the history and atmosphere of the medieval town and then head off to join in one of the many parties that are held every night.

Krakow, Poland – Thankfully this wonderful city was spared under communist rule and still retains many beautiful buildings and churches. It also has a castle and plenty of museums, galleries, shops, bars and restaurants so there is plenty to see and do. Accommodation and food are still very cheap compared to other destinations in Europe, which makes this a perfect stop off point for backpackers on a budget.
