Here we will take a look at how you can go about getting your international driver’s license, and which common holiday destination countries recognizes them. We will also look at ways to anticipate the peculiarities of driving around different countries, and to familiarize yourself with local traffic signs and signals, not to mention customs, before you go.

Licensing Requirements

Most countries do not accept a U.S. driver’s license, so if you intend to drive when you get to your destination, you will need an international driver’s permit (IDP). This license is an official translation of the U.S. license into 10 languages (it is printed in 10 languages). You will still need to carry your valid U.S. license as the IDP is not a license to itself and therefore not accepted by many countries without the U.S. license. It is safer to take both licenses with you when you go on vacation.

The IDP is a special license for tourists that allows them freedom to drive in other countries. The American Automotive Association (AAA), points out that the IDP is currently recognized by over 150 countries, and has been authorized by a UN treaty. This authorization allows motorists to drive vehicles internationally without having to do additional tests or applications to obtain a permit. The license/permit acts as proof that the driver is in fact the holder of a valid driver’s license that was authorized by their home country.

This list will only reflect a few of the over 150 countries where you can drive with the international license.

* Two passport-size photographs.

* Your valid U.S. license.

There is also an application fee which is less than $20.00 at this time.

Getting Familiar With Your Driving Experience Before You Go

Check with the Consulate

There is no need to sit and wait around for the day you arrive at your destination before you get familiar with what you will be facing on the roads. A visit to the U.S. State Department’s website will yield links to information on what to expect in each country. You can also contact the consulate for the respective country and get some information.

You will need information on the rules and customs specific to the roads of that particular country. Of utmost importance is the condition of the roads and safety issues. These vary from country to country as road infrastructure may be better in one country as opposed to another. Another factor to bear in mind is the level of law enforcement when it comes to road use. Take time out to research all this before you go as a means of familiarizing yourself with what is to come. Gather information on the associated laws and road signs as well as the penalties meted out for traffic violation. Knowing the rules before you start driving will save you from many bad experiences.

Using Maps and Charts

You do not want to feel like fish out of water when you get to your destination. Using your map and chart to get familiar with the physical layout of the land and key landmarks is also another great way to prepare yourself for your trip.

Get the Opinion and Experiences of Other Travelers

Reading review sites such as Tripadvisor where people give their experience of places they visited is also another effective way in which you can familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations as well as other important aspects of the country. There are also forum boards where you can ask questions and have fellow travel enthusiasts share with you their experiences and even give some advice. The more information you have, the more you will be able to evaluate and decide on what is of importance to your travel, and the broader and clearer the picture you will have of your destination.

Traveling abroad is an exciting experience that leaves you with years of valuable memories and lessons. No one wants their vacation to be spoiled by unfortunate circumstances, especially if it is something that could have been avoided. Travelers must remember that every country is governed by its own sets of laws and regulations from which foreigners are not exempted. It is up to you to use the sources available to you and ensure you do adequate research and preparation to make your trip hassle free and enjoyable.
