Stay Safe

The UK’s biggest city can be daunting ever for seasoned travellers, but taking a few simple precautions before you leave will make your journey a safer and more pleasurable one. Make sure your mobile is fully charged before you leave so you can make a call or use your GPS map if you get lost. Don’t carry around a large sum of cash in case you’re the victim of pick-pocketing and keep your belongings close by and in a secure bag at all times. If you’re going out at night, stick to well-lit areas and travel in a group wherever possible.

Stay in a Hostel

Hostels in London have come on a long way over the years and in most cases the stereotype of them being dingy and dirty couldn’t be further from the truth. There are plenty of great alternatives to plush hotels and you’ll often find good, basic and clean accommodation at a fraction of the price. Hostels are a particularly good bet for students and solo travellers as they’re a great place to meet new people.

Get There by Car

You can find some great deals on trains and buses if you book far enough in advance, but if you’re travelling as a group public transport isn’t always the best option.  It’s cheaper than you might think to rent a car in Britain and it’s a great way to avoid packed trains and pesky delays at the station. Take it in turns to drive so you can all see some of the UK’s fantastic scenery on the way.

Avoid Pricey Tourist Attractions

London is an expensive city and its tourist attractions are no exception. You should expect to part with a lot of money for attractions such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Windsor Castle, but there are plenty of tourist must-sees that won’t cost you a penny. From hip hangouts in Camden and Covent Garden to free tours of The Tower of London and the huge Natural History Museum, there are plenty of free attractions scattered all over the capital.

Don’t Fork Out at Meal Times

London boasts some of the most exclusive – and priciest – restaurants in the country, but there are still plenty of places to enjoy great food on a budget. When the sun is shining, head to Hyde Park with a picnic for stunning views of Buckingham Palace or tuck in on the banks of the Thames. If you’re planning on eating out there are plenty of cheap eats such pizzerias and bistros, and the eclectic street food on offer shouldn’t be ruled out!
