Follow our guide to saving money on your trip to Amsterdam and you will be amazed at how much you will be able to see and do and the money you will save.

Getting there and accommodation

Amsterdam is easy to get to from most European countries with flights arriving into Schipol Airport. Many budget airlines fly here so the cheapest option is probably to book your flight with a budget carrier and book your accommodation separately. As with any city there is accommodation available to suit every budget, from hostels through budget and mid-range hotels up to 5* luxury. Whatever your hotel preference, booking online should save you some money. The time of year you go may also have a bearing on the price you will pay for your hotel.

Getting from the airport to the city

The cheapest and quickest way to reach the city from the airport is on one of the trains which run every 15 minutes and take 15-20 minutes to reach the city. If you choose to take a taxi from the airport it will take you longer and cost you more.

Things to see and do

In common with most cities there are a lot of things to see and do in Amsterdam, some of which are free and some of which you have to pay for. As well as famous paying attractions such as Anne Frankhuis and the Van Gogh Museum there are other things to do that are free.

The city is famed for its markets with the most famous one being Bloemenmarkt, the only floating flower market in the world. There are other markets too selling food, clothing and souvenirs which are free to visit, unless you make some purchases! Some of the city’s churches are also free and Westerkerk with its huge tower is worth visiting. It is possible to get there by taking the free ferry from the central station meaning you can arrive in an unusual way and it will not have cost you anything.

The best way to save money on attractions that you have to pay for is to purchase an I Amsterdam card which includes a pass for public transport, tickets to get into the major attractions as well as discount vouchers. Attractions covered by the pass include the Rembrandthuis and the Artis Royal zoo and holders of the card will also be entitled to take a canal cruise to experience this beautiful city from the water.

Amsterdam is the sort of place that is easy to visit if you are on a budget as there is so much to see and do that does not need to cost the earth, leaving you with enough money for some souvenirs of your trip.
