Tips for Boomerang Kids Heading Home after the Holidays

Colleges and universities have reported that as many as 25% of students graduate mid-year during December or January. Sounds like a lot of moms and dads will receive the great gift of returning offspring after Christmas – many of whom plan to stay for a while, since the U.S. Census Bureau says close to 80% will be unable to secure a new job prior to earning their degree and will be forced to move back home.

If you’re preparing for a holiday move back home, you’ll want to do it as cheaply as possible – especially if Santa’s not coming down the chimney with any job offers. Here are a few money-saving tips:

Tip #1 Shipping boxes – For a few boxes, parcel service is usually best. But if the total weight is over 150 lbs., shipping companies that offer freight services are usually cheaper.

Tip #2 Shipping furniture and larger items – For furniture, appliances and such, contact small movers. They’ll put your items on a truck with those of other people who need furniture shipping, and you’ll save. Want to save even more? Ask the mover if they offer a price break for customers who do the prep work of wrapping furniture and other large items in bubble wrap.

Tip #3 Shipping brokers and job boards – Don’t settle for the first price you get! A shipping broker has access to multiple carriers, which can mean you pay less. Or consider posting your shipment on a shipping job board where carriers will bid for it. But make sure your carrier isn’t just a guy with a pickup truck – check for references, insurance coverage, and bonded status.
